Poiché l'artista indossava spesso completo e bombetta, si è pensato ad un autoritratto, anche se non somigliante.

Un'altra scuola di pensiero ritiene che l'uomo raffigurato sia l'eroe Fantomas, alter ego dell'artista, inventato durante la gioventù e impiegato spesso come soggetto in molti suoi quadri.
